How to Interpret Cotton HVI Reports

HVI (High Volume Instrument) reports are essential for evaluating cotton quality. At Max and Safe, we provide these reports with every shipment to guarantee total transparency.

What is an HVI Report?

HVI is a standardized testing system that measures the physical properties of cotton fibers quickly and accurately.

Main Parameters

1. Fiber Length

  • Measurement: In inches or millimeters

  • Typical range: 0.90" - 1.25" (short to extra long)

  • Importance: Longer fibers produce stronger and softer yarns
  • 2. Micronaire (Mic)

  • Range: 3.5 - 5.0

  • Meaning: Measures fiber fineness and maturity

  • Ideal: 3.8 - 4.4 for most applications
  • 3. Strength

  • Measurement: Grams per tex (g/tex)

  • Range: 24 - 32+ g/tex

  • Importance: Higher strength = more durable yarns
  • 4. Color Grade

  • Scale: 11, 21, 31, 41, 51 (best to worst)

  • Factors: Whiteness and amount of foreign matter
  • 5. Uniformity

  • Percentage: Typically 77% - 85%

  • Meaning: Consistency in fiber length
  • 6. Trash Content

  • Measurement: Area percentage

  • Impact: Affects cleanliness of final product
